Let the Games Begin

 In Stuff We Say

WODAreaTonight at 5pm Pacific Time the first CrossFit Open WOD of 2013 and it will create a frenzy of competition that ultimately ends at the CrossFit Games.  Even if you do not have your eyes on Regionals or the Games, the Open is an exciting event on its own.  The Open is a time for CrossFitter around the World to compete in exactly the same WODs.  Even if you are 445th worldwide, you receive a great sense of community seeing your name on the official leaderboard.  In addition, this year CrossFit HQ has added a custom leaderboard to the site’s feature.  If you are registered for the Open, you can pick any track your progress against any other registrants in the Open.  Cool.

Since this is a Worldwide competition, we are going to try to maintain the competition-feel at Firebird CrossFit.  It is great to imagine competing with others using the leaderboards, but it is even better to have a real live competitor sweating and swearing alongside of you.  To this end, we are holding the Open competition-style on Saturdays at 9am.  We will set up heats, and you will have level one coaches there to no rep you and validate your scores.  So basically, participating in the Open will be like signing up for a competition each week for five weeks.  It is going to be hard work and great fun.  Anyone signed up for the Open will have a spot reserved for them on Saturdays.  If you did not officially sign up for the Open, you can come Saturdays at 9am to cheer on your fellow athletes and then participate in a non-judged version of the Open at 9:30am.  Yes, our Saturday WOD will be the Open WOD even if you did not sign up.

If you signed up for the Open and cannot make it to a Saturday, you may make an appointment with Chuck or Nicky to perform the Open.  Most likely, you will have to perform the WOD alone with your coach/judge and sans adoring fans, so try to make Saturday if at all possible- it will improve your performance.
